By studying what change leaders are doing that works well, does not work well and how to implement change most effectively, we can derive best practices and create repeatable, scalable ways to manage the people side of change. All of Prosci’s models, tools and training programs have been derived from this best practice research to put the experience of thousands of practitioners at your fingertips.


Closed: The Tenth Best Practices in Change Management Study

The 2017 Best Practices in Change Management study has closed. With over 1700 responses from 82 countries and hundreds of organizations, the 2017 Best Practices in Change Management is the largest study ever conducted in the field of change management. Thank you for helping to grow this discipline by providing your insights. We will release our tenth Best Practices in Change Management report, which will include findings from this and other studies, in early 2018.

Since 1998, Prosci has conducted nine benchmarking studies and collected extensive data from more than 4,500 research participants to uncover best practices in the field of change management. Prosci’s 2015 study was conducted in March 2015 and included collecting and analyzing data from 1,022 participants. The data from this study and Prosci’s previous eight studies is available in a compendium report, Best Practices in Change Management – 2016 Edition.


Study development

For the 2015 study, Prosci’s research team established a set of over 350 comprehensive questions, addressing both broad and specific concepts in change management to uncover real-world experiences and best practices. In addition to longitudinal questions asked in each study and topics revisited from earlier studies, the question set incorporated topics on recent innovation, current trends and other major areas of interest in the field of change management.

Data collection

To solicit participation in the study, Prosci sent a public announcement through thousands of online media outlets. Additionally, 90,000 members of Prosci’s Change Management Learning Center were invited to participate. Participants reported on a major change initiative either ongoing at the time of the study or recently completed. Responses were submitted electronically to a secure database. Generally, participants were fulfilling at least one of the following roles on their change initiatives:

  • Change sponsor or top-level manager
  • Change management team member or leader
  • Project manager, project team member or project leader
  • Consultant acting as an advisor or team member

Analysis and reporting

Analysis and reporting are the most intensive phases of Prosci’s research cycle. As soon as the data collection period ended for the 2015 study, Prosci’s team of research analysts began evaluating the responses, which consisted of more than 400,000 cells of both quantitative and qualitative data. Our analysts used statistical calculations to draw findings from quantitative data. They also carefully reviewed and studied the qualitative data, following a robust process of pattern analysis to identify trends in the written responses. All top findings were reported through concise summaries, which were then compiled and structured to become part of the compendium report, Best Practices in Change Management – 2016 Edition.
